I used to intentionally create avoidance around things I wanted my dogs to leave alone, now I create attention and movement towards me.
You can find this tip in the Black Friday webinar sale through FDSA:

One suggestion for giving pills that works for me One suggestion for giving pills that works for me and my dogs:
Give handfuls of treats with the pill in one of them, followed quickly by treats with no pill
Establish a pattern of handful of treats, one after the other
Name the handful that has the pill in it so as not to trick the dog
If the dog really hates the pill taste or texture, start with something they do like, or empty capsules, etc...
High value treats-I use kibble here, but I started off with much higher value

This splendid puff ball turns 12 today! I can't be This splendid puff ball turns 12 today!
I can't believe that Number 1 has made it to 12 and I hope that all of you experience the honor of seeing your dog through all the life stages.
Ones is happy and healthy and I look forward to many more months with him.
Out of curiosity, what is the oldest dog you have had? Ours was Changer, who made it to a couple weeks past 14.

Want some loose leash walking? For me, it starts Want some loose leash walking?
For me, it starts with teaching the dog how to move with a collar pull. If you are good about your timing and mechanics, the dog starts moving with the pull because the treat magically appears in the direction of the pull.
Collar grabs can be useful by themselves as well!
I work really hard to make sure my dog moves with me into restraint, instead of opposition reflex. Ion has been especially challenging with this concept.
Where can you find how to teach this skill?
I've got a blog in my website (link in profile) that goes over collar pulls/yielding.
and Spaces in Between, my FDSA class running in the December term includes all the steps of Loose Leash Walking.
And yes...you can practice on a harness instead of a collar if that is your preference. 🙂

This question has come up a couple times in questi This question has come up a couple times in questions in privates, socials, my Patreon page, etc... so I decided I would show this video, along with a recipe for success. I'm all about making the dog feel good around things they are scared of, and 5 month old dogs staring and wuffing at things are scared of them. But I'm also about not leaving my dog hanging, not knowing what to do, so I give help immediately. I find this works really well with the GSD types, who mature into reactivity, and pushing their triggers around really quickly, not something I want them rehearsing. Instead, I want them looking to me for help, I tell them what to do and we move on. In separate sessions, I might work more at distance where they can observe quietly, etc... This session does not exist in isolation with all the other things that the dog is learning at the time.
The above video is about alpacas, but you can substitute dogs, people, cars, etc... in place of the alpacas.
pre reqs:
marker cues-at least 2, toss and from hand, sees if dog is listening
offered eye contact
hand touch-moves the dog away or towards
Some form of come to heel/my side and sit-this does not need to be competition style, just basically a come over here and stay by my side with glances at me
And then the recipe is:
See trigger
Offered eye contact-you need to be far enough away that the dog can do this without staring for more than a couple seconds
If the dog can't offer eye contact, then you cue a marker cue-can you eat? which is essentially, can you do an alternate behavior other than staring, or barking, etc... and can you calm down enough to eat
Once the dog can offer eye contact, with you marking and feeding, from hand or scatter on ground, then you ask multiple marker cues, then obedience skills.

There are many different ways to deal with these types of things, this is just one of them that I do.
I cover things like this on my patreon, along with training challenges, etc...
